Question

One carries alanine 1. (10 points) After treating cells with a mutagen, you isolate two mutants. and the other carries methionine at a site in the protein that normally contains valine. two mutants again with mutagen, you isolate mutants from each that lion nucleotide omosome, and eeds at about now carry threonine at the site of the original valine. Assuming that all mutations caused by the mutagen involve single nucleotide changes, deduce the codons that are used for valine, alanine, methionine, and threonine at the affected site. Explanation / Answer

When we refer the given table for amino acid codes, it can be deduced that the triplet codes that code for the amino acids,Valine , Alanine, Methionine and Threonine are as below:

VALINE (Val) : GUA GUC GUG GUU

METHIONINE (Met) : AUG

THREONINE (Thr): ACA ACC ACG ACU

ALANINE (Ala) : GCA GCC GCG GCU

Now from the codes it is very evident that a single nucleotide base change could result into coding a different amino acid.

Which again proves the fact that in the presence of a mutagen this mutation is prompted. While in case of te secondary treatment that was given, the original valine position was replaced by threonine thus resulting in another class of mutants.
