Question

Date structor Section OST-LAB QUESTIONS For the following questions, assume you have a population of 215 pea plant flowers that are the result of a cross between heterozygous parents for flower color (Ppx Pp). . How many of the offspring would you expect to have purple flowers? 1. How many would you expect to have white flowers? . What percent of the offspring are expected to be homozygous dominant? . How man flowers are expected to be heterozygous? For the genetic crosses shown in Figure 8.4, would the results of the cross YyRr X YyRr have been different if the two genes were on the same chromosome? Explain. .

Explanation / Answer

Answer:

1). Pp x Pp

P

Pp (purple)

pp (White)

Purple = P_= 75% = 215 * 75/100 = 161

White = pp = 25% = 215*25/100 = 54

Homozygous dominant = PP = 25% = 54

Heterozygous dominant = pp = 50% = 108

2).

If the genes are on different chromosomes, they assort independently and yield (9/16) yellow & round, (3/16) yellow & wrinkled, (3/16) green & round and (1/16) green & wrinkled. The F2 phenotypic ratio will be 9:3:3:1.

If the two genes are present on the same chromosome, they are linked and do not assort independently. Hence the ratio mentioned above is not possible. It means that during linkage, more parental (non-recombinant) phenotypes and less recombinant phenotypes will be produced.
