Question

The internal organelles and the enzymatic machinery of the cell play fundamental roles in living organisms. Part a. What is the role of the mitochondria and the chloroplasts in cellular metabolism (what do they do)? And what are the mechnisms they use to carry out these processes (how do they do it)? Part b. What do enzymes do? What are they made of? How do they function? And what is the effect of environmental conditions such as temperature, concentration, and pH on their function?

Please help me with this! Thank you very much!!!

Explanation / Answer

a) ROLE OF MITOCHONDRIA- The most prominent roles of mitochondria are to produce the energy currency of the cell , ATP (i.e. phosphorylation ogf ADP). Through respiration, and to regulate cellular metabolism. The central set of reactions involvedin ATP production are collectively known as the citric acid cycle, or kreb's cycle.

ROLE OF CHLOROPLASTS- Chloroplasts are the food producers of the cell. chloroplasts work to convert light energy of the sun into sugars that can be used by the cell. the entire process is called photosynthesis and all depends on chlorophyll molecules in each chloroplasts.

b) 1. Enzymes are biological molecules that speed up the rate of chemical reactions within cells.

2. enzymes are made u of long chains of amino acid.

3. Enzymes are highly selective catalysts, means that each enzyme only speeds up a specific reaction. the molecule that an enzyme works with all called substrates. the substrates bind to region on the enzyme called the active site.

4. EFFECT OF

Temprature- enzyme activity increases with the increase of temprature.

concentration- increasing enzyme concentration will increase rate of reaction.

pH- ph do not affect the shape of enzyme but may change shape and properties of substrate.
