Question
Briefly describe the major steps of the mechanism of how a competent bacterial cells becomes transformed, beginning with the binding of transforming DNA from a donor cell to the surface of the recipient cell, and ending with the resulting transformed cell which is now genetically altered relative to the parental cell (Do NOT describe the definitions of transformation, transformed cell, competent, or competency; only your answer within the allotted space immediately below this question will be considered).
Explanation / Answer
Steps involved in the transformation are:
1. The plasmid DNA is mixed using chilled cells of bacteria. Chilled cells are incubated with ice in order to so that, plasmid and cells are contact with each other.
2. After that plasmid and cell mixture is heated to 45–50°C, so that competent cells take plasmid.
3. The heated mixture, is again placed into ice.
4. After some time, plasmid DNA is able to enter the bacteria cells.
