Briefly (in a few sentences) explain what is happening the following examples, and suggest what the parent/teacher might do to alleviate the situation.

(a)   Third-grader Peter can barely contain himself in class; the minute the teacher asks a question, he calls out the answer; half the time he hasn’t even waited to hear the entire question; much of the time he gets the answer wrong.

(b)    Eighth-grader Jennifer has just gotten her social studies test back, and notices she received a C-. She is very embarrassed, and quickly stuffs it into her backpack before anyone can see. The teacher offers to go over the tests with anyone who wants to, but she looks away quickly and joins her classmates at lunch.

(c) Eleventh-grader Jules is experiencing a lot of stress lately. He finds himself dwelling on questions about his future, his priorities. It seems that everywhere he turns, he gets mixed messages about how to act, and about his community’s and family’s expectations of him.

(d)    75-year old John is exhibiting symptoms of confusion and depression which are of concern to his children. There is no history of dementia in the family. His children are wondering what might be going on, if there might be ways to restore his wellbeing, and what to do to best support him.
