Question
An airplane pilot sets a compass course due west and maintains an airspeed of 224km/h . After flying for a time of 0.500h , she finds herself over a town a distance 120km west and a distance 11km south of her starting point.a) Find the magnitude of the wind velocity.
b) Find the direction of the wind velocity.
Express your answer as an angle measured south of west
c) If the wind velocity is 44km/h due south, in what direction should the pilot set her course to travel due west? Use the same airspeed of 224km/h .
Express your answer as an angle measured north of west
Explanation / Answer
her resultant speed due west is 124/0.5 = 248 kmph. so airspeed due west is 248-215= 33 kmph. airspeed due south is 21/0.5= 42 kmph. the magnitude of the wind vel is sqrt ( 42^2 + 33^2 ) = 53.41 kmph. the angle of airspeed south of west is arctan ( 42/33)=51.85 degrees. if wind velocity is 38 kmph due south, her velocity should have 38 kmph component in north dir. so component west = sqrt ( 215^2 - 38^2 ) = 211.6 kmph. the angle north of west is arctan( 38/211.6 ) = 10.18 degrees.
