Question
A prospective study of various risk factors for coronary heart disease was conducted among 1130 male medical students. The participants filled out a series of questionnaires about their diets, lifestyles and health every 5 years for over a 35 year period. Among the 150 men who drank 5 or more cups of coffee a day, 10 had acute myocardial infarctions (heart attacks) during the study period. Among the 200 men who did not drink any coffee, there were 5 heart attacks Answer the following in the space below A. What type of study is this? B. Calculate the appropriate measure of association (Show your work for partial credit. If you want to show your 2x2 table, you can use the table function to enter your table) C) Is coffee consumption associated wtih myocardial infarction? Explain your answer Bonus (+2 points) D) Can incidence be calculated from this study? If so, what is the incidence of congenital heart defects?Explanation / Answer
Ans- 1this type of study is known as cross sectional studies. as a disease is studied by linking it's associated factors with risk of happening of disease.
Ans-2 total no of individual taking 5 or more coffee =150
Mycocardial attack happens in = 10
Measure of association = 10/150 = 0.03
Those who were not taking coffee = 200
Mycocardial attack = 5
Measure of association = 5/200= 0.025
Ans-3 coffee drinking can be associated with the mycocardial effect as the measure of association in coffee drinker is high than those whose are not regular drinker.
Ans-4 incidence can be calculated by taking sum of total myocardial attack divided by total population
15/350 = 0.04
