Question

Biochar. Biomass feedstock is made from growing plants in the presence of sunlight and water to yield plant biomass. Biomass is then pyrolyzed (combusted in the presence of low oxygen levels) to form biochar. Demonstrate why biochar is considered effective as a means to sequester carbon from the atmosphere. (Hint: by adding the two chemical equations for the processes of photosynthesis and pyrolysis, you can determine the overall net reaction.) For how long do you think biochar will be stable and free from oxidation? Is this enough to be effective as a carbon sequestration process? 5.

Explanation / Answer

Biochar is a carbon negative compound that has the ability to reduce atmospheric carbon di oxide which in turn will be use during to build plant and other organic materials. Hence the atmospheric carbon will be reduced and sequestered in to the ground by Biochar. Stability of Biochar is very strong as Biochar carbon will be reduced in the soil for over a hundred of years since leakage of sequestered carbon will be having a huge impact.
