Question

You are on a train that is traveling at 3.0m/s along a level straight track. Very near and parallel to the track is a wall that slopes upward at a 12 degree angle with the horizontal. As you face the window (0.90m high and 2.0m wide) in your compartment, the train is moving to the left. The top edge of the wall first appears at window corner A and eventually disappears at window corner B. How much time passes between appearance and disappearance of the upper edge of the wall?

---------------------B -----------------------B

---------------------A -----------------------A

Explanation / Answer

Deal with it in two parts. time = distance/velocity. You can see that at a time 2/3 = 0.667seconds after the edge appears at A, that point on the wall will be at the bottom corner below corner B. What further D distance does the train have to travel so that the wall is 1m higher? 1/D = tan(12) D= 1/tan(12) = 4.705 m At 3 m/s that will take 4.705/3 = 1.568 s The total time from appearing at A to disappearing at B is therefore 0.667 + 1.568 = 2.235 s
