Question

Suppose the Mars rover Curiosity is on its way to the landing area which includes the rover and the rocket and has a mass of 2500 kg, and that it starts the final slowing down at an altitude of 200 m above ground with a downward speed of 200 mi/h. The slowing is accomplished by the landing rockets firing toward the ground, providing a back thrust. Calculate the thrust in newtons that is needed for Curiosity to land on the Martian surface at 1.7 mi/h. The acceleration due to gravity on Mars is 3.76 m/s2.

Explanation / Answer

1.7 mi/hr =7.6*10^-1 m/s 200 mi/hr =88.89 m/s ............ hence deceleration should be (88.89^2-0.76^2)/(2*200) =19.75 hence thurst should be m(a+g) =2500*(19.75+3.76) =58775 N
