It is not true. As we know that, sperm cell doesnot contribute its mitochondria to the egg cell during fusion. Sperm cell's mitochondria is self destructable. So, it is not inherited in the offspring. Mitochondria based diseases only inherited maternally. As mother egg cell contribute its mitochondria during fusion. Thus, the zygote formed after fusion has only materal mitochondrial DNA. So, the mitochondrial disease which is due to malfunctioning of mitochondrial DNA is purely maternally inherited.
