Question

At launch the space shuttle weighs 4.5 million pounds. When it is launched from rest, it takes 8.00 to reach 157km/h , and at the end of the first 1.00min its speed is 1570km/h. What is the average acceleration (in m/s^2) of the shuttle between 8.00s and the end of the first 1.00min ? Assuming the acceleration is constant during each time interval (but not necessarily the same in both intervals), what distance does the shuttle travel during the first 8.00s ? and what distance does the shuttle travel during the interval from 8.00 to 1.00min ?

Explanation / Answer

First we need to cobvert to meters per second

157 km/hr = 43.61 m/s

1570 km/hr = 436.1 m/s

The acceleration between 0 sand 8 sec is found by

vf = vo + at

(43.61) = (0) + a(8)

a = 5.45 m/s2

The acceleration between 8 sec and 1 min is...

vf = vo + at

436.1 = 43.61 + a(52)

a = 7.55 m/s2

The distance for the first 8 sec is found by

d = vot + .5at2

d = (0) + .5(5.45)(8)2

d = 174.4 m

The distance between 8 sec and 1 min is

d = vot + .5at2

d = (43.61)(52) + (.5)(7.55)(52)2

d = 12475.32 m   which is 1.25 X 104 m
