Question

Two blocks move along a linear path on a nearly frictionless air track. One block, of mass 0.121 kg, initially moves to the right at a speed of 4.80 m/s, while the second block, of mass 0.242 kg, is initially to the left of the first block and moving to the right at 6.50 m/s. Find the final velocities of the blocks, assuming the collision is elastic.

velocity of the 0.121 kg block = ---Select---to the rightto the leftno direction
velocity of the 0.242 kg block = ---Select---to the rightto the leftno direction

Explanation / Answer

collision is elastic,

v1 - v2 = 6.50 - 4.80 = 1.7

using moment7um conservation,

0.121 x 4.80 + 0.242 x 6.50 = 0.121 x (1.7 +v2) + 0.242v2

v2 = 5.37 m/s

v1 = 7.07 m/s

v of 0.121 = 7.07 m/s

v of 0.242 kg = 5.37 m/s
