Question
we did and experiment in physics lab with and pully. at first we had 280 g on each side of the pulley held by a string. so we were asked to put one gram of mass on one of the masses, which will start movement in the system. then we were asked to approximate the effect of friction? i know that we there is static friction which stop the string from moving but as soon as i added one gram of mass on one of the masses the string moved and came to a stop. therefore kinetic friction will then appear with fk=1 (g) x 8.9m/s/s. so i am confused when i heard approximate the effect of friction i don't quiet understand. if you guys can plz help me with that I'll really appreciate it.
Explanation / Answer
when the string would start to move ,the kinetic frictional force would indeed be more than 1g*9.8m/s^2 since we do not know anything about the coefficient of the friction. hence when it comes to stop the frictional force(static) will be 1g*9.8
and when it is moving, it will be greater than that.
