Question

A student recently placed some mealworms in a rectangular box to observe their behavior. She
noticed that the mealworms tended to group to one end of the box. She also noticed that this end of the box had some fresh, damp leaves in it and that the box was darker at that end. She wondered what caused them to group at this end, which she called the "right end".
Hypothesis 1: They went to the right end because it had leaves in it. Hypothesis 2: They went to the right end because the humidity was higher. Hypothesis 3: They went to the right end because it was darker than the left end.
For each of the three (3) hypotheses, address the following:
(a) Provide a detailed description of your experiment to test this hypothesis.
(b) What are your predictions for the expected results?
(c) What results would show that the hypothesis is probably incorrect?

Explanation / Answer

1) Distribute leaves all over the box with the remaining conditions same.

1) Distribute the leaves all over the box and keep the dark part of the box in open light and the other half in dark.

2) Distribute leaves all over the box and humidify the soil all over.

If the distribution of mealworm changes in 1 that means hypothesis 1 is correct. If they changed their positions in 2 that means hypothesis 3 is correct. If they changed their position in 3 implies hypothesis 2 is correct.

If the distribution changes in more than one of the above experiments, that would mean the hypothesis is incomplete or incorrect.
