(Solidification) A machine tugs sideways on a horizontal elastic rope with a frequency of 5 Hz. A graph of the transverse displacements of this rope wave at t = 10.0 s as a function of position is shown below. Sketch a graph of displacement as a function of position for t=10.2 s. What is the velocity of waves on this rope? If the frequency of the machine tugging on the rope is doubled to f = 10 Hz: What is the new wavelength of waves on this rope? What is the new velocity of waves on this rope ? How does the above graph change to reflect this new frequency?

Explanation / Answer

a) As we can see from the graph ,the wavelength is 0.4 m and given frequency is 5 hz .so speed of wave is 2 m/sec .so from 10 sec to 10.2 sec the wave travels 2 x 0.2 = 0.4 m so just shift the entire graph by 0.4m to the right or left depending on which way the string is being pulled.

b) the velocity of the waves depends only on the material and tension in the wave it is independent of frequency so it 2m /sec as we calculated above

c ) since velcoity remains constant and frequency doubled ,wavelength becomes half that is 0.2 m

and the velocity will remain constant 2m/sec

and the new graph will be shrinked by half .it will be a sine wave like the graph given but now the graph will repeat after every 0.2 m instead of 0.4 m . definition of wavelength the length after which the graph repeats itself.
