What if there were three hydrogens? 3. Suggest an experiment that you could do to find out how many acidic hydrogens are in your unknown acid. Explain the theoretical background and an experimental procedure for credit. O Type here to search

Explanation / Answer

Answer:

2. Consider the two acidic hydrogen acid H2SO4 and three acidic protons H3PO4.

The molecular weght of  H2SO4 is 98.079g/mol and H3PO4 is 97.994g/mol. Hence presence of two or three hydgen will not give much diffrence in molecular weight.

3. Experimantal procedure: the no.of hydrogen present in the unknown acid can be find by reaction with base that is NaOH. The no of moles of NaOH consumed is equal to number of moles of hydrogen present in the unknown acid. Acid react with to base gives salt and water.

Number of hydroen in acid+Base---> No. of moles of salt+ water

CH3COOH+NaOH->CH3COONa+H2O ( involved 1 hydrogen)

2CH3COOH+2NaOH->2CH3COONa+2H2O ( involved 2 hydrogen)
