Consider two people, John and Joe, driving along the interstate I-10. Joe's car is at rest on the side of the road. John is driving eastward at a constant velocity of 40.0 km/hr. John drives past Joe at time t = 0. At that instant Joe takes off after John with a constant acceleration of 1.50 m/s. Calculate the distance D that it takes Joe to catch up with John. Calculate the time T that it takes Joe to catch up with John. Calculate Joe's velocity as he passes John.

Explanation / Answer

1.v = john car's velocity = 40 km/hr = 40 x 1000m /3600s = 11.11 m/s

after time t :

11.11 x t = 0 + 1.50t^2/2

t = 14.82 s

d = 11.11 x 14.82 = 164.59 m

2. time t = 14.82 sec

3. v =at = 22.23 m/s
