Question
Three charges, each of magnitude 4 nC, are at separate corners of a square of edge length 5 cm. The two charges at opposite corners are positive, and the other charge is negative. Find the force exerted by these charges on a fourth charge q = +3 nC at the remaining (upper right) corner. (Assume the +x axis is directed to the right and the +y axis is directed upward.)
Explanation / Answer
The force exerted by one + ve charge on the charge q is
f1= 9e9*3e-9*q / [0.05] ^2 = 10800 q N.
Similarly for the other +ve charge
f2 =10800 q N.
These two are at 90 degree apart.
Their resultant is?2*10800= 15274*q N and is along the diagonal and away from the negative charge.
