Question
Three charges, each of magnitude 4 nC, are at separate corners of a square of edge length 2 cm. The two charges at opposite corners are positive, and the other charge is negative. Find the x- and y- components of the force exerted by these charges on a fourth charge q = +3 nC at the remaining (upper right) corner. (Assume the +x axis is directed to the right and the +y axis is directed upward.)

(Assume the +x axis is directed to the right and the +y axis is directed upward.)Explanation / Answer
same charges repel each other and opposite charges attract each other.
now force due to lower left corner charge on +3 nc:
it is -ve.so force is attractive in nature.
magnitude=9*10^9*(4nC)*(3nC)/((sqrt(2)*0.02)^2)=1.35*10^(-4) N
direction:
from the upper right towards lower left i.e. (-1/sqrt(2))*(i+j) direction.
force due to lower right corner charge on +3 nc:
it is +ve.so force is repulsive in nature.
magnitude=9*10^9*(4nC)*(3nC)/(0.02)^2)=2.7*10^(-4) N
direction:
from the lower right towards upper right i.e. +j direction.
force due to upper left corner charge on +3 nc:
it is +ve.so force is repulsive in nature.
magnitude=9*10^9*(4nC)*(3nC)/(0.02)^2)=2.7*10^(-4) N
direction:
from the upper left towards upper right i.e. +i direction.
so net force along +x direction=1.745*10^(-4) N
net force along +y direction=1.745*10^(-4) N
