Question

Legend has is that Isaac Newton was hit on the head by a falling apple, thus triggering his thoughts of gravity. Assuming the story to be true, estimate the speed of the apple when it struck Newton. (I need a equation and problem worked out, lets assumed that apple was falling from 1 meter and we know gravity to be 9.81. What equation do I use and how do I sovle it, please show work).

Explanation / Answer

h = u^2/2g

u^2 = 2gh

u^2 = 2*9.81*1 = 19.6

u = sqrt 19.6

u = 4.42 m/s
