Question
if a meter stick has a mark every 10cm(100mm) the least count is 10cm. If marked off in centimeters the least count is 1cm. If marked in millimeters the least count 1 mm. In this experiment we will use some instuments with least counts of .1mm and .01mm. It is often possible to estimate a measurement to some fraction of the least count. The smallest fraction to which you can reliably estimatis is the instrumental limit of error.
Suppose you have a clock with sixty divisions on its face
the least count of the second hand is:
the least count of the minute hand is:
The lease count of the hour hand is:
Please help!! I dont understand at all!!
thank you!
Explanation / Answer
Least count is basically the minimum of a quantity that you can measure with a particular device.like if stick is marked with 10 divisions you can measure minimum upto 10 cm and not less than that accurately for more precision you need smaller divisions.Similarly, for clock
(a) 60 divisions means minimum u can meaure 60th section of a unit i.e (1/60th) portion of a second u can measure so 1/60=0.01667 second will be the least count .
(b) here in 1 minute = 60 seconds and u have 60 divisions so u can easily mark for each second also......i.e 1 second will be the least count.
(c) in each hour we have 60 minutes so each division represent each minute so,least count is 1 minute.
