Question

Hello,

This unit is by far my weakest. Please show HOW to get the answer and briefly explain for full 5-star rating.

I don't understand all the symbols in this unit....I get confused easily. Sorry

Q: A spaceship travels at a speed of 0.90c to a star that is 9.0 ly away.

1) According to a person on Earth, how long does the trip take?

2) According to a scientist ON the spaceship, how long does the trip take?

3) According to the scientist ON the spacehip, what is the distance travelled during the trip?

4) At what speed do observers on the spaceship see the star approaching them.

Thanks in advance.

Explanation / Answer

(a) the observer on earth sees the correct velocity of 0.9c so the trip takes 9/0.9 = 10 light years.

For (b) and (c) calculate gamma Y = sqrt (1 - (v^2/c^2)

gamma Y =sqrt (1- 0.9^2) = 0.91 which is used to figure time dilation and length contraaction.

(b)10 Ly/0.91 = 10.98 Ly

(c)9 LY/0.91 =10 Ly

Note that on the trip, the velocity is still measured as 0.9c
