Question
Must show all work!!!! A Playground merry-go-rond has a radius of r=3.0m and mass 120kg it is initally spinning at wo=.80 rad/s when a child of mass m=20kg initially still at the center of the merry go round crawls to the rim and stops moving with respect to the merry go round. the moment of intertial of the merry go round is 1/2mr^2
A.) calculate the angular momentum of the merry go round and child system when the child is at the center of the merry go round?
B.) calculate th angular velocity of the merry go round and child system when the child reaches the rim?
MUST SHOW ALL WORK!!!!
Explanation / Answer
The rotational velocity will decrease, due to conservation of angular momentum. When the child moves away from the center of the merry-go-round, they will increase the moment of inertia of the system (you can think of moment of inertia as being an indication of how far away the mass of the system is from its center of rotation). Angular momentum must be conserved however, and is given by: L = I%u03C9 If I (moment of inertia) increases, then %u03C9 (the angular velocity) must decrease to compensate.
