Question
Find the gravitational force that the earth exerts on a 10.0 kg mass if it is placed at the following locations. Consult the figure 12.9 in the textbook, and assume a constant density through each of the interior regions (mantle, outer core, inner core), but not the same density in each of these regions. Use the graph to estimate the average density for each region.
(a) at the surface of the earth
(b) at the outer surface of the molten outer core
(c) at the surface of the solid inner core
(d) at the center of the earth.
Explanation / Answer
earth mass = 5.972E24 kg
earth radius = 6371000 m
distance of outer surface of the molten outer core from center = 6371000 - 2890000 = 3481000 m
distance of surface of the solid inner core from center = 1220000
all data are taken from wikipedia..
a)
F = Gm1m2/r^2
=6.67*10^-11*5.972E24*10/6371000^2
=98.1364 N
hey u can check this as F=mg
b)
F = Gm1m2d/r^3
=6.67*10^-11*5.972E24*10*3481000/6371000^3
= 53.62 N
c)
F = Gm1m2d/r^3
=6.67*10^-11*5.972E24*10*1220000/6371000^3
=18.792 N
d)
at the centre it's zero....
as we go down.... gravity diminishes and become zero at centre
