Question

A satellite is in a circular polar orbit above the atmosphere at an altitude of 170 km above the surface of the earth. Assume that the satellite passes directly over Greenwich (longitude 0 degrees, latitude 51.5 degrees N ) on a particular orbit. What will be the satellite's longitude at the point in time when it is just passing 51.5 degrees N on its next orbit. Remember the Earth turns counter clockwise about its axis while the satellite orbits it. The radius of the earth is 6370 km. The mass of the earth is 6 x 1024 kg. G = 6.67 x 10-11 N-m/kg2. Hint: You will need to work out the satellite's period.

Explanation / Answer

33 degrees West
