Question
I am not sure how to do this??????
Copper has an x-ray absorption edge at lambda = 0.13808 nm. That is, an x-ray of this wavelength has enough energy to ionize the atom by removal of a K-shell electron. The x-ray is absorbed by the electron, giving it enough energy to escape the atom. Calculate the energy of a K-shell electron in copper. This is analogous to the ground state of a hydrogen atom, where the energy is E = -13.6 eV. (We might say that hydrogen has an absorption edge at lambda = 91.18 nm.) Keep 4 significant digits in both parts of this problem. The copper K alpha line is at 0.15444 nm. As your textbook illustrates, this is due to a L to K transition of an electron. Find the energy level of the L shell in copper.Explanation / Answer
hc/lamda = 8.997 KeV
