Question

Please help me answer the following questions:

a. What types of structures allow animals (in this particular question, basically anything that is multicellular) to obtain (ingest) food?

b. What types of structures provide locomotion for animals (in this particular question, basically anything that is multicellular )?

c. How do genetics determine an organism's structure?

d. How has natural selection influenced the types of structures we see in animals today?

e. How are structures found in fossilized animals from the Precambium different from structures that appear in the Cambrian fossils?

f. What role does mutation play in evolution?

g. What characteristics classify organisms as animals?

h. What adaptations appear in the fossils of the Cambrian explosion?

Explanation / Answer

a. Food is ingested through the mouth and broken down through mastication. Food must be chewed in order to be swallowed and broken down by the digestive system. All animals with the exception of some endoparasites such as tapeworms have a digestive system.

b. There are three types of skeletons such as endoskeletons, exoskeletons and hydrostatic skeletons. Locomotion includes the various movements of organisms such as walking, running, jumping, crawling, climbing, swimming, flying etc.

c. The genetic material of organisms contains many genes. These genes express to form different proteins. every protein has two functions depending upon a gene. FIrst function is that the protein may be the structural protein contributing to the physical or structural properties of cells or organisms. Examples are muscles, hair proteins, etc. and the second function is that the protein may be an enzyme which catalyzes one of the chemical reactions of the cell.

d. Natural selection is the process in nature by which organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and reproduce more than those less adapted to their environment. For example, individual birds that had sharp beaks better able to catch and eat enough food to survive and reproduce in their environment, so this trait becomes more common in the hawk population.
