Lesson 1B Review Questions-The Sample 1. What gives hemoglobin and myoglobin their distinctive colors?" 2. If athletes wanted to increase their endurance by increasing their oxygen-carrying capacity. how might they accomplish this increase 3a. Would you expect a flightless bird, such as an ostrich or turkey, to have a preponderance of dark meat (dark meat being rich in myoglobin) in its wings or its legs? 3b. What about a bird of flight, such as a duck or a hawk? 4a. How could gene-therapy, where a normal gene is substituted for a defective copy of a gene, help individuals inflicted with sickle-cell anemia? 4b. Similarly, how could gene therapy be used for those individuals who have vitamin B12 carrier protein disease?Explanation / Answer
Ans 1) Hemoglobin and myoglobin contains the iron containing heme protein which gives the distinct colour. The myoglobin stores the oxygen in the muscle cells and in the haemoglobin the oxygen is stored in the blood cell.
Ans 2) The iron is a critical mineral which is important to increasing stamina and endurance. It is necessary to create haemoglobin and it is an important protein which is used by RBC and it helps in delivering oxygen concentration and helps increase the muscle strength.
Ans 3a) yes, it would have prepoderence of dark meat in the legs. The meat in its legs has rich myoglobin as it uses its legs for its function and requires a lot of strength and endurance.
Ans 3b) The flight birds like a duck or hawk would have meat that is rich in myoglobin in its wings instead of legs as it uses more of its wings.
Ans 4a) The gene therapy can help people being inflicted with sickle cell anemia as it substitutes a normal gene for a defective one. The malfunctioning gene of hemeglobin in the system is replaced by the healthy normal gene and hence helps in the cure.
Ans 4b) if an individual has defect in vitamin B12 carrier protein, gene therapy can also help cure that. It replaces the gene and helps in curing the problem.
