Question

- Certain cells in your pancreas make digestive enzymes that are secreted into ducts and carried to your small intestine. If you looked at these pancreatic cells by electron microscopy, which organelle would you expect to see a lot of?

• If a person has a lysosomal storage disease, which parts of the endomembrane system are disrupted?

• You watch an amoeba in culture moving

along the bottom of the dish, constantly changing its shape. What structure(s) within the amoeba is likely responsible for this?

Explanation / Answer

1) Enzyme is secreted from a cell. Secretory purpose of a cell is totally goverened by two organelle one is RER ( rough endoplasmic reticulum) and golgi complex. So, these two could be found more in number.

2) This disease causes disruption of normal lysosomal breakdown of cellular wastes. Accumulation of undigested wastes can be a reslt of this. Or, it may also result in hampered endocytosis exocytosis processes.

3) Amoeba has no particular shape. It is a shapeless unicellular animal. So as an animal it is bound to move. Now the cell changes it shapes that is by forming pseudopodia. This pseudopodia is the locomotory organ or amoeba. It is a kind of projection with no particular shape in general. It just protrudes a part of its cytoplasm which is enclosed in the cell membrane. The cytoplasm is further divided into 2 parts. A more concentrated ectoplasm and liquid endoplasm. Ectoplasm forms the border of the pseudopodia and endoplasm fills that projection and it moves accordingly.
