Question

The bobsleds (and occupants) are launched (at point A) by a large spring onto a huge semi-circular track (radius=100m) of frictionless ice. The teams rey to achieve the furthest landing distance on a level landing firld below.

A. Find the work (if any) done by the ramp on the bobsled as it moves from point A to point B. Explain reason

B. The mass of the team is 800 kg. If they are traveling at a speed of vB=50m/s when they reach point B, find the spring. (The spring was compressed x=4.0m before the launch.) Show work

C. Find the acceleration of the bobsled (magnitude and direction) at point B. Show work

D. Find the magnitude of the normal force by the track on the bobsled at point B. Show work

E. How fast will the team be traveling right before they land on the landing field? Will this hurt? Show your work.

Explanation / Answer

A.

Zero. Because the force exerted by the ramp on the sled is perpendicular in direction to the motion of the sled, hence F.dr=0 at every point between A and B.

B.

KE at B= 1 MegaJoule

Therefore KE at A= 1MJ - .8 MJ (since potential energy= 0.8 MJ)

=0.2 MJ

As this KE was given by the spring,

0.2 MJ = 200,000 J = (1/2)*k*4^2

Therefore k= 25 kN/m
