Question
11. (2pts) You are testing three chemical compounds found at the Frontier Fertilizer Superfund site in Davis using the Ames test to determine if any of the compounds are mutagenic. Below are the number of histidine revertant colonies observed from the Ames test for each compound, indicating the various compound concentrations used in the Ames test. What can you conclude from the data, choose ALL that apply.

Explanation / Answer
The answers applicable to the given test are :Compound B is mutagenic,Compound C is mutagenic and Of all three, Compound C is the most potent mutagen.
colonies are called revertants because a new mutation has “reverted” the initial mutation and restored wild type function/role so that these cells can now grow on his.
For mutagenic chemicals/compounds, the no's of revertant colonies usually increases linearly with its concentration, at a rate that is taken to be relative/proportional to its mutagenic potential. The number of colonies obtained without the mutagenic compound was 5 colonies. we can see from table that compound A leads to decrease in colonies at higer concentartion of compound A while Compound B and Compound C leads to linear almost increase in colonies as the concentartion of Compounds increases from the figure. While comparing Compound B and C, we can see that both increases linearly but Compound C starting revertant colonies at 10 mg/ml is more as compared to Compound B.
