Question
A small swimming-pool light is underwater, 1 m below the surface of a swimming pool. A light ray from it that starts out directly upward emerges undeflected along the Normal. But some of its light rays (tilted from Normal) canNOT emerge into air. What is the farthest distance from that "center-line" (along the water surface), where light rays CAN emerge into air? (nwater = 1.333) Answer 0.013 [m] 0.563 [m] 0.750 [m] 0.881 [m] 1.000 [m] 1.135 [m] 1.333 [m] 1.512 [m] A small swimming-pool light is underwater, 1 m below the surface of a swimming pool. Critical angle, ic = sin^-1 ( 1 / n) = 48.60 degree
Let the farthest distance be x,
so tan (90 - ic) = 1 m / x
So, farthest distace = 1 / tan (90 - 48.60) = 1.135 m
