Question
A gymnast with a mass of 58.5 kg does a handstand 1.00 meter from the end of a 2.40 meter long balance beam. The balance beam has a mass of 155 kg and is resting on two supports, one on each end.
a) Is this system in translational equilibrium? What does that mean?
b) Is this system in rotational equilibrium? What does that mean?
c) What is the magnitude of the force that the left-side support exerts on the balance beam?
d) What is the magnitude of the force that the right-side support exerts on the balance beam?
Sorry the pic is so big.
Explanation / Answer
d) at the right end using moment equilibrium at left end
we have
58.5*9.8*1 + 155*9.8*1.2 = N*2.4
we get N=998.375 N
c) (58.5+155)*9.8 = 998.375 +N2
we get N2 =1093.925N
