Question

The picture below shows two bar magnets, each next to a charged plastic rod. In case (a), the rod is positively charged; in case (b), it is negatively charged. Each magnet is free to rotate about a pivot through its center, and each rod is directly in line with the pivot point,

a) 1) In each case, (a) and (b), does the magnet rotate clockwise, rotate counterclockwise, or not rotate? Explain.

The picture below shows the same two magnets, again free to rotate about the pivots; this time there is a circular wire loop below each (seen from the side); in each case, the center of the loop is directly in line with the pivot point. In case (c), the wire loop contains a current that flows to the right in the side of the loop closest to us (i.e., the current would be counterclockwise if viewed from above); in case (d), the current goes downward on the side of the loop closest to us.

2) In each case, (c) and (d), does the magnet rotate clockwise, rotate counterclockwise, or not rotate ? Explain
