Question

A technician has learned all techniques and skills for material processing. But he has never learned material science. Now he wants to find a material that its weight is as light as aluminum and its tensile strength is as high as steel. So he comes to TTU for instruction. You, as an instructor, need to explain to him what material he can select, and what procedure/s he should undertake to approach the goal with minimal explanation (as brief as possible) on the reason/mechanism related to your suggestion.

Explanation / Answer

As per the given task, material should have high strength to weight ratio. The unit for the same is kN. m / kg.

This ratio should be consider while selecting such criteria ( lighter weight with good enough strength)

Below are few material with strength to weight ratio :

You can compare this ratio. This ratio shows relative higher strength with less weight.

Obviously higher the ratio, better the material.

You can also see from table that some alloy shows higher value of this ratio. so select proper alloy can also serve good for our application.

Thanks !!!!

Material strength to weight ratio ( kN m/ kg) AL 115 Al alloy 204 stainless steel 60 brass 67 Titanium 76 Titanium alloy 260 copper 24 Glass fiber 1300 Carbon fiber 2450
