Question

A team of eight dogs pulls a sled with waxed wood runners on wet snow (mush!). The dogs have average masses of 15 kg, and the loaded sled with its rider has a mass of 202 kg. The coefficient of static and kinetic friction is mu_a = 0.14 and mu_m=0.10 Calculate the acceleration starting from rest if each dog exerts an average force of 185 N backward on the snow in m/s^2. What is the acceleration once the sled starts to move in m/s^2? Using part (a) calculate the force in the coupling between the dogs and the sled in Newtons. Using part (b) calculate the force in the coupling between the dogs and the sled in Newtons.

Explanation / Answer

(A) N = 202 x 9.8 = 1979.6 M

Static friction = 0.14 x 1979.6 = 277.14 N

Fnet = 8(185) - 277.14 = 1202.86 N

a = Fnet/ m = 1202.86 / ( (15 x 8) + (202))

= 3.74 m/s^2

(B) fk = uk N = 198 N

Fnet = 8(185) - 198 = 1282 N

a = 1282 / ((15 x 8) + 202)

a = 3.98 m/s^2

(C) FT = 202 x 3.74 = 755.5 N

(D) FT = 202 x 3.98 = 803.96 N
