Question

You find yourself up late studying for a micro exam. Looking for company you go to a local eatery and enjoy some dip and chips. Your friends don't finish all the dip, so you bring it home to munch on tomorrow morning. Assume you inoculated the dip with 3,140 bacteria the first time you double- dipped, and assume they grew slowly (at their minimum temperature in the fridge overnight) at a doubling, or generation, time of 1.5 hours. You double-dipped at 11pM, and you are now eating the leftover dip at 8 am (the next day). How many bacteria are in your dip this morning? Show your work for credit. (1 pt)

Explanation / Answer

Inoculation time = 11 pm

Starting number of bacteria = 3,140

Incubation duration = 11 pm - 8 am = 9 hrs

Duplication time = 1.5 hrs

Number of generations = 9/1.5 = 6

i. 3140 X 2 = 6280

ii. 6280 X 2 = 12560

iii. 12560 X 2 = 25120

iv. 25120 X 2 = 50240

v. 50240 X 2 = 100480

vi. 100480 X 2 = 200960 bacteria
