Question

The right answer is B but I'm not really sure why, if some one could please explain.

chanle Optogenetics! There are light-gated plasma membrane ion channels that can be engineered to express in the nerve cells of mice. Shine a light into the brain (by implanting a fiber optic cable in the mouse skull), and you can trigger channels in nerve cells to open up. Your professor tells you to engineer a light-sensitive potassium channel in your mice brains. What will happen when you send light through your cable, allowing potassium to move down its electrochemical gradient? (A)Membranes will de-polarize, triggering action potentials (B) Membranes will not de-polarize, so nerve cells will not fire (C) Nerve cells will get cooked by so much light; why did you do that? (D) Disco party in the mouse skul!

Explanation / Answer

Moving of potassium down will hyperpolarisation instead of depolarisation and action potential is not genrated and hence nerve cell not fire. Hence option B is correct.
