Explanation / Answer

Coal based power has almost 41% of the world’s electricity generation. These plants operate on the modified Rankine thermodynamic principle. The efficiency is mainly governed by the parameters of this thermodynamic cycle. The overall coal plant efficiency ranges from 32% to 42%. The efficiency of this cycle can be increased by considering the superheat and reheat steam temperatures and superheat pressures. In this case, the plants need to operate at steam pressures of 170 bar and 570C Superheat, and 570 C reheat temperatures. To increase the effeciency further, the plants need to be operated at very high pressure. In this way, the efficiencies of these plants range from 35% to 38%. Super critical power plants operating at 220 bar and 600C can achieve efficiencies of 42%. Ultra super critical pressure power plants at 300 bar and 600C can achieve efficiencies in the range of 45% to 48% efficiency. By increasing the pressure and high working temperature, high amount of heat per unit of water can be liberated from the plant and hence will increase the efficiency of the coal power plants.
