Question
A space station is shaped like a cylinder with mass M=950kg and a diameter of 5m. A single person of mass m=75kg and height 185cm is inside. If the space station were initially not rotating when the person decided to start running the station would start to rotate backwards as the person ran forward. How fast would the person have to run relative to the floor to feel their normal weight A space station is shaped like a cylinder with mass M=950kg and a diameter of 5m. If the space station were initially not rotating when the person decided to start running the station would start to rotate backwards as the person ran forward. How fast would the person have to run relative to the floor to feel their normal weightExplanation / Answer
Let he runs with a speed of v m/s and space station rotate with speed v'
Conserving angular momentum
75*2.5*v=950*2.5*2.5*v'/2*2.5
So we got
v=6.33v'
Weigth on earth=75*9.8=75*(v+v')*(v+v')/2.5
Putting v'=v/6.33
We got v=4.27 m/s
