Question

PLEASE SHOW ALL WORK!

Balance a ration for a 650 lb. calf, on a dry matter basis, that requires 1.75 lbs of CP and 9.5 lbs of TDN. The Dry Matter Intake is expected to be about 15 lbs (so don't feed more). Feed 1% of the animals body weight as hay (DRY MATTER), and use corn and soybean meal to meet the remaining needs (if any).

Use corn:       10% CP         90 %TDN      88% DM

    Hay             13% CP         55% TDN      84% DM

    SBM           50% CP         88% TDN      90% DM

1. Calculate the dry matter composition of the daily ration. Then convert to as-fed amounts.

2. What if I fed just 0.5% of the calf's body weight as forage (DM basis)?

Explanation / Answer

Answer 1:

When we Feed 1% of the animals body weight as hay

Then, 650 lb calf x 1% = 6.5 lbs hay

6.5 lb hay x 0.84 %DM = 5.46 lbs DM hay

5.46 lbs DM hay x 0.55 %TDN = 3.003 lbs TDN hay

Avg. TDN corn and SBM = (88% + 90%)/2 = 89%

TDN needed/avg. TDN corn and SBM = amount of grain to feed

6.497 lbs TDN needed/0.89 = 7.3 lbs grain mix

5.46 lbs hay x 0.13 CP% = 0.7098 lbs CP hay

1.75 – 0.7098 = 1.0402 lbs CP still needed from grain

Let’s assume,

Corn = x

So, SBM = grain mix – x

(x)(0.1) = (1.0402 lbs CP – x) (0.5)

x = 0.8668 lb CP corn

1.0402 – 0.8668 = 0.1734 lb CP SBM

lb corn x 0.1 CP% = 0.8668 lb CP corn

lb corn = 8.668 lb

SBM x 0.5 CP% = 0.1734 lb CP SBM

lb SBM = 0.3468

note: to calculate 0.5 % just replace 6.5 in above answer with 3.25 and calculate accordingly, you can calculate any body percentage by above mentioned answer. thanks
