Question
12. Consider an ocean current flowing at 2.5 m/s. a) How much kinetic energy is contained in cubical block of water 1 m on a side? (the rest in the picture)
1 m on a side? (The density of seawater is about 1,080 kg/m3.) (b) If the flow is perpendicular to one of the cube faces, what is the rate at which the current carries kinetic energy across each square meter? Your answer gives an upper limit for the power that could be extracted from the flow-although an unrealistic limit because you'd have to stop the entire flow.Explanation / Answer
a) mass of water in 1 cubic meter = 1030kg
so energy = 1/2mv2 = 1/2*1030*2.52=3218.75J
B)Volume of water flowing in one second = velocity*time*side = 2.5*1*1=2.5cubic metre.
mass of water = 2.5*1030=2575kg
So energy in once second through the side = 1/2mv2 = 1/2*2575*2.52 =8046.87J/s
