Part A)

The lens makers equation is

1/f = (n-1)(1/R1 - 1/R2) Since the lens is symmetric, R1 and R2 are the same value, but opposite in sign.

1/f = (1.5 -1)(1/-20 - 1/20)

f = -20 cm

Part B)

Using 1/f = 1/p + 1/q, we have

1/-20 = 1/40 + 1/q

q = -13.3 cm

Then, the magnifiction is found by M = -q/p

M = h'/h

.333 = h'/2

h' = .67 cm (upright)
