Question

9). Answer each question below with correct response (In, Out, up, Down, Left, Right)

a). A positive charge moves to the right in a uniform magnetic field directed into the page. What direction is the force exerted on the charge by the magnetic field?

b). A positive charge initially moving to the right enters a region containing a uniform magnetic field. The charge is intitially deflected into the page as it enters the magnetic field. What must be the direction of the magnetic field?

c). A long, straight wire carries a current. There is a uniform magnetic field directed downward (not due to the wire) and the force exerted on the wire is directed to the left. In what direction is the current?

d). A wire loop exists in the plane of the page. A decreasing magnetic field directed out of the page penetrates through the loop. What is the direction of the induced magnetic field within the area of the loop?

Explanation / Answer

a) Up--point fingers of right hand in the direction of the velocity of the moving particle so that you can curl your fingers in the direction of the magnetic field. Your thumb points in the direction of the Force. Note: If it is a negative charge, you point your hand in the opposite direction of the velocity. b) Down--point fingers of right hand in direction of velocity and thumb in the direction of the deflection. Which way can your fingers curl? Downward. c) In--point thumb of right hand in direction of force so that you can curl your fingers downward. Now straighten your fingers. What direction are they pointing? Inward d) Out--This is a little hard to explain, but I'll try. The magnetic field is coming out of the page, but it is decreasing so there is less and less coming out. An induced magnetic field compensates for the change so it will be out of the page.
