Question

End Diastolic- Volume ml Force of Contraction mN/mm2) 50 40 30 20 10 60 80 100 120 140 160 180 200 End Diastolic Volume (ml) a) Using the graph above, fill in the chart to the right of the graph with data. The values do not need to be exact just estimate. (1/2 pt) b) What is the independent variable in this study? c) What is the dependent variable? d) Study the graph above and its general shape. During the last six weeks, what (1/2 pt) (1/2 pt) experiment did we do that intended to show a similar relationship? (1/2 pt) e) Based on your work in lab (note: knowledge of cardiac function not necessary), why did the force of contraction decrease from B to C? (2 pts) c) How do you think the decrease in force seen in the table above between points and C contributed to the symptoms observed in Mr. Lemma? (1 pt

Explanation / Answer

a) From the graph the following data can be put in the table-

End of Diastolic vol (ml)                                       Force of contraction (mN/mm2)

A                        65                                                                        10

B                       135                                                                        45

C                       165                                                                        20

b) Independent variable is always plotted on x-axis, in this graph the independent variable in End of diastolic vol.

c) Dependent variable is always plotted on y-axis, in this graph the dependent variable is Force of contraction.

d) Please mention the experiment that you performed in the lab that illustrates how sinu-soidal graphs are plotted (sine curve)

e) The above graph follows a sine curve where the value of variable on y-axis increases with x-axis upto certain point (A to B in this graph), then the value of of y-axis remains constant upto certain range of values on x-axis (this is shown as flat line on the graph). and then after value of y-axis variable goes down or decrease with the increase in the value of x-axis upto certain point (this is represented by B to C portion of the graph). This completes half a cycle of sine curve.

f) Here more info is needed to answer this part of the question (like what symptoms are observed in Mr Lemma). In general a decrease in the force of contraction will also reduce the cardiac output, which results in fatigue in the patients.
