Question

Suppose that you have three resistors: a 250 , a 870 , and a 1.20 k resistor.
(a) What is the maximum resistance you can obtain by combining the resistors?
2.32 kohm
(b) What is the minimum resistance you can obtain by combining the resistors?
167 ohm

Now you build a circuit using all three resistors and a 20V battery with an internal resistance of 58O
(c) What is the maximum terminal voltage of the battery when you connect the battery to the resistors?
19.5 V
(d)What is the maximum circuit current when you connect the battery to the resistors?
mA

I was able to get everything but part d. Please help!

Explanation / Answer

since current is inversely proportional to resistance, for a given voltage, maximum circuit current occurs for the condition of minimum resistance which you found out to be 167 ohms.
so now 167 ohms id in series with the internal resistance 58 ohm making net resistance=167+58=225 ohms
so maximum circuit current=20/225 A=4/45 A=0.089 A
