Question
A charge +Q is located at the origin and a second charge, +4Q, is at distance "d" on the x-axis. Where should a third charge, "q," be placed, and what should be its sign and magnitude, so that all three charges will be in equilibrium? My Answer:
Since +Q is at the origin, and +4Q is at distance d, charge q should be -2 C in magnitude and placed at point d/2 so as to be equidistant from both points and of opposite charge so both +Q and +4Q attract -2 with the same force. This is not a problem posted on mastering physics for my course so I don't know the answer but I was just wondering what someone else thought.
Thanks for any input
Explanation / Answer
it should be placed right d/3 from origin. sign negative. and charge of 7.11 x 10^(-20). i assumed Q to be 1.6 x 10^(-19)
