Question

History Bookmarks Window Help Neutron stars, such as the one at the cemter of the Crab Nebula, have about the same mass as our sun but a much smaler diameter Part A you weigh 670 N on the earth, what would be your weight on the surface of a neutron star that has he same mass as our sun and a diameter of 21.0 km? Take the mass of the sun to be m, 199 1030 kg, the gravitational constant to be G 667 10- N mkgand the acceleration due to gravity at the earth's surface to be g m/s Express your weight in newtons 9.810 View Available Hintis) Previous Answers tron X Incorrect: Try Again; 5 attempts remaining Provide Feedback Next > Physic

Explanation / Answer

Weigh on earth = 670 N

Mass on earth = W/g = 670/9.81 = 68.30 kg

Now gravitational acceleration on surface of neutron star will be

gn = GM/R^2

R = d/2 = 21/2 = 10.5 km

gn = 6.67*10^-11*1.991*10^30/(10.5*10^3)^2

gn = 1.204*10^12 m/sec^2

Weight on neutron star will be

Wn = m*gn = 68.3*1.204*10^12

Wn = 8.22*10^13 N
