PROJECTILE PROBLEMS 2 Name Chris throws a rock at 21 m/'s into the air at 40.° above the horizontal. How long is the rock in the air? What is the maximum height for the rock that Chris threw? How far away from Chris did the rock land? Nicole throws a ball at 25 m/s at an angle of 60.° above the horizontal. What is the range of the ball? A cannon fires a projectile at 75.0m/s at an angle of 56 above the horizontal. How high does the projectile get off the ground?

Explanation / Answer

here,

a)

initial velocity , v = 21 m/s

theta = 40 degree

the time of flight , t = 2 * v * sin(theta) /g

t = 2 * 21 * sin(40) /9.81 s

t = 2.75 s

the maximum height , hmax = (v * sin(theta)) /(2g)

hmax = ( 21 * sin(40))^2 /(2 * 9.81 ) m

hmax = 9.3 m

the horizontal distance , x = (v * cos(theta)) * t

x = ( 21 * cos(40)) * 2.75 m = 44.2 m
----------------------------------

b)

initial speed , v = 25 m/s ,

theta = 60 degree

the range , R = v^2 * sin(2*theta) /g

R = 21^2 * sin(2 * 60) /9.81 m

R = 38.9 m

c)

initial speed , v = 75 m/s

theta = 56 degree

the maximum height , hmax = (v * sin(theta))^2 /2g

hmax = ( 75 * sin(56))^2 /( 2 * 9.81) m

hmax = 197 m
